Florence, Alabama -- 1241 Lee Jackson Hwy (Florence Blvd)

Seemingly far off the beaten path, the Florence Howard Johnson's Restaurant and Motor Lodge complex was operating by 1956, and was an early ultra-modern standardized location featuring a Nims-type Gate Lodge and Restaurant.

While the Motor Lodge was purged in 1985, it was returned to the Howard Johnson fold in 1992 as the Hojo Inn Of Florence but only lasted until 1995. Subsequently the property endured considerable depravation and was ultimately demolished by the early 2000s.

Above: After having stood for a little more than forty years, the former Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge was cleared away.

Below: The Restaurant became a Mexican themed eatery called La Fonda. Note that the part of the sign that proclaims "RESTAURANT" was a recycled part of the Howard Johnson's street sign. An uncertain fate awaits the former Restaurant, for La Fonda had ceased operations by the late 2000s.
