Mobile,
Alabama |
--
3132 Government St |
The
Mobile Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge was opened in the summer
of 1969 and remained under its Orange Roof until about 1999.
Then the Motor Lodge, owned and operated by Hospitality
Ventures of Mobile Inc., was converted into a Guesthouse
Inn. Its principal owner was Fred Whiddon described by some
as a catalyst for Mobile's economy. He was founder and former
president of the University of South Alabama who died following
a bout with prostate cancer in 2002.
The
former Motor Lodge was sold in 2005 and rebranded as a Howard
Johnson. However its reconversion was brief and the property
became unbranded as the Emerald Palms Hotel and Conference
Center before ceasing operations during the early 2010s. |
