Tucson,
Arizona -- 1025 E Benson Hwy |
The
Tucson Motor Lodge/Restaurant complex was the first to open along
Arizona's Highways. With Howard Johnson's expanding rapidly West
during the end of the 1960s, Tucson opened in the Fall of 1969.
It featured a traditional layout that included an A-frame Gate
Lodge. Unfortunately its Gate Lodge was demolished and replaced
with a "Pueblo-looking" lobby building.
The former Motor Lodge survived as a Howard Johnson well into
the 1990s but was subsequently converted into a Quality Inn.

The
"Western" style Restaurant with its centrally mounted
spire cupola was converted into a JB's. But with JB's ownership
changes and bankruptcies by 2004 it had become the unbranded Country
Folks Restaurant.
