Looking
to expand and revive the Orange Roof restaurant concept,
in one last gasp the Howard Johnson Company built several
stand-alone locations in the Northeast often at marginal
Interstate exits.
North Stonington was one of those locations, and was a
standard "mansard-type" built nearly at the
Rhode Island border. Even as it was located at a quiet
exit and offered somewhat difficult access, the unit kept
its HoJo's name until 1985. No subsequent tenants were
successful, and the building had become a ruin by the
early 2000s.
