Cocoa
-- 860
North Cocoa Blvd. ( U.S. Hwy. 1) |
|
Sited
in a spot where U.S. 1 made a gentle curve, motorists traveling
north or south couldn't help but get an Orange gleam in their
eyes as they approached the Landmark. Like many other vintage
Howard Johnson's, Cocoa lost its name in the middle 1980s. Calling
itself the Space Coast Motel, the former HoJo's carried on a number
of years using its re-purposed original Trapezoid sign frame--complete
with its chaser-arrow!
A
Classic Complex!
Boasting a shuffleboard court, putting green, and tether ball
in addition to its standardized HoJo's amenities, the Cocoa Motor
Lodge and Restaurant complex opened in 1963 as #175 with 53 air-conditioned
guest rooms. |

While
the Motor Lodge retained its basic form and played to its location
along the Space Coast, the Restaurant was altered and converted into
several "concepts" before it met its final end. |

Not
in MY Backyard!
Cocoa's last owner made a last desperate plea to local town politicians
to save his motel. He had proposed a plan that would have kept the
tired former HoJo's intact a while longer--he wanted to convert
it into a shelter for homeless people. However his idea was rejected.
Prepped
for Demolition
By the time Bob Venditti made his way along the coast in 2005, Cocoa's
demolition had begun. |
