Lakeland,
Florida --
3425 U.S. 98 @ I-4 |

Directly
facing Interstate 4, the 64 room Lakeland Motor Lodge and Restaurant
complex opened in 1966. In addition to the Howard Johnson's, the
I-4/U.S. 98 interchange, located between Tampa and Orlando, came
to host numerous hospitality enterprises . |

Lakeland
remained a Howard Johnson's until 1987. Subsequently it became
the unaffiliated Royalty
Inn. Unfortunately it was significantly altered--especially
the Gate Lodge. |

dated from HoJo's days and probably led to the Restaurant's
overflow dining area or Lounge. |

Having
suffered fewer alterations than the Gate Lodge, the Restaurant
had become an International House of Pancakes and retained its
open beamed cathedral ceiling! |
