Lakeland, Florida -- 3425 U.S. 98 @ I-4

Directly facing Interstate 4, the 64 room Lakeland Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex opened in 1966. In addition to the Howard Johnson's, the I-4/U.S. 98 interchange, located between Tampa and Orlando, came to host numerous hospitality enterprises .

Lakeland remained a Howard Johnson's until 1987. Subsequently it became the unaffiliated Royalty Inn. Unfortunately it was significantly altered--especially the Gate Lodge.

View between the Restaurant and Gate Lodge--the door in the photo dated from HoJo's days and probably led to the Restaurant's overflow dining area or Lounge.

Having suffered fewer alterations than the Gate Lodge, the Restaurant had become an International House of Pancakes and retained its open beamed cathedral ceiling!
