Typical
of standard Howard Johnson construction during the latter
part of the Company's existence, MainGate East or Fountain
Park was one of the larger complexes ever developed as it
offered more than 400 guest rooms! Built near the Walt Disney
World complex, it boasted that it was only 3 miles from the
                    park.
                  Not
lasting long as a Howard Johnson's, the property was a Ramada
during my 2004 visit. The high-rise section was closed and
had been gutted for renovation, but the mid-rise sections
were open and filled with guests the day of my visit. Unfortunately
the Mansard style Restaurant which was among the last ever
built, retained non of its interior Howard Johnson's appeal--actually
it had no appeal at all! Having been set up as a buffet only
eatery, its name, "Coney Island," was a misnomer
as hot dogs were not available! |
