Catching many by surprise, Hurricane Charley slammed into the west coast of Florida on a path immediately into the former Punta Gorda Howard Johnson's. Having been converted into a Holiday Inn by the 2000s, the former Motor Lodge was serving as a base station for television storm chasers and was housing evacuees from other areas as the Category 4 storm drove inland.

As the storm continued with its 145 mile per hour winds, windows were shattered and the roof peeled away exposing the once sheltering interior to the ravages of Mother Nature in all of her fury.

Fortunately the storm struck during a time of low tide, but the usually tranquil waters of Charlotte Harbor were nonetheless stirred into a furious tempest.
