St. Augustine-East, Florida -- 3552 N. Ponce De Leon Blvd
(337 San Marco Ave)

Opened in about 1961, St. Augustine was among the last to feature a Nims type Gate Lodge. The Motor Lodge remained a Howard Johnson's until about 1982 and then later became a Roadway Inn and finally a super-stuccoed Super 8 Motel. By early 2007 no trace of the Motor Lodge remained as it had been demolished to make way for a condominium or retail strip development.

Above: The bright spot on the brick end wall in the extreme right edge of the image is where the Lamplighter figural was once placed!

Below: While on vacation in the early 1990s, Mr. Passaro spotted St. Augustine's Lamplighter figural still gracing the end wall facing the main highway even though the venerable Motor Lodge was operating as a Roadway Inn. He spoke to the former Motor Lodge's owner in an attempt to acquire the figural, but his offer and plea was rebuked.

As one of the last Ranch or Nims-type Gate Lodges ever built, St. Augustine's was also one of the best preserved by the mid 2000s.
