Planned
shortly before the Howard Johnson Company had fully adopted the
A-frame Gate Lodge, Saint Petersburg-MidTown opened in 1960 with
a non-standard but Ranch style Gate Lodge.
In
1977 the site was sold by a company called Area Redevelopment Corp.
for $1.4 million to Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Shipper of Wycoff NJ. Excited
by a nearby soon to be completed Interstate 275 interchange, the
couple anticipated an influx of new tourists seeking overnight accommodations
and announced plans to double the Motor Lodge's room count to 144!
Exceptionally modern for its time, the once swank Howard Johnson's
Motor Lodge survived until the purges of the middle 1980s, and its
accompanying Howard Johnson's Restaurant was at some point demolished
and replaced by a gas station.

Under new management and
having been renamed the Kenwood Inn following a period out-of-business,
Richard Fernley who spotted the former Motor Lodge noted that
"this location by far is the most rundown I have been
to, one can honestly say this property is the most dangerous
motel in St. Pete."
He
also noted that looking beyond its current state of neglect
"you can see a lot of original Howard Johnson's."
