Howard Johnson's Landmark: November-December 1962

One in a string of Howard Johnson's Restaurants that came to serve the Clearwater/St. Petersburg area, Treasure Island was opened as a Company operated stand-alone unit. Immediately across from public beach access, it had an exceptionally high profile location! After a little more than three years of successful operation, the Restaurant was joined in 1966 by a compact 3-story 84 room licensee operated Motor Lodge.

Caption: Construction is under way on an 84-unit Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in Treasure Island. Completion is set for mid-January. The resort, valued at approximately $1 million. is owned by by the H. J. Treasure Island Corp. of Miami Beach. The property is immediately south of a Howard Johnson Restaurant at 112th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard.


The property was constructed on three lots which were purchased in 1964 for $155,000 by the H. J. Treasure Island Corp which was headed by Ben Chaves of Chaves Construction Co. based in Miami Beach, Florida. The site fronted Gulf Boulevard and extended to Boca Ceiga Bay. The Motor Lodge was the first new major motel opening in the area since the 66-unit Billmar Beach Motel opened in December of 1962. Initial plans called for a 150-unit Motor Lodge.

Below: In its last decade as a Howard Johnson's, its signature A-Frame Gate Lodge was squared-off and shorn of its Lamplighter Weathervane and Cupola, but retained its Orange Roof.
