          Opened
in 1959, Tampa-East was providentially sited near a temporary terminus
of the incomplete Interstate 4 allowing the sprawling complex to
enjoy much early success. The Motor Lodge featured a Nims-type Ranch
Gate Lodge and a mix of room types in both one and two-story guest
buildings. A more modern interior-corridor two-story guest building
was added across the front of the property in the late 1960s.

                Fitting
with Howard Johnson's ideal of luxurious ultra-modern accommodations,
most guest rooms of the 1950s through the early 1960s were outfitted
                  with Harry
                  Bertoia
wire side chairs. Described by some as a study of space, form,
and function, the chairs were a striking reminder to patrons
that Howard Johnson's was the epitome of modernity!

Below: Note the radio control in the bedside
table, and the orange Lamplighter stickers on the slider. Also
notice that the telephone was on the continuous counter rather
                  than at bedside.

            Traveling
with his parents in the 1960s, Steven LJ Russo had the good fortune
of being a guest at Tampa-East while it was in its hey-day!
              Above:
Mom and young Steven rested in the room looking at brochures to
                plan their sight-seeing adventures.

                By
the middle 1970s Tampa-East had lost the Howard Johnson's name
and its Restaurant was demolished. During the Motor Lodge's
last bit of existence it was known as the New Cigar City Motel.

                The
former Motor Lodge itself was razed in 2002, and no trace of
it or the surrounding orange grove remained. Much of the site
became a branch of Suncoast Schools FCU.
