Tampa-North,
Florida --
720 East Fowler Ave |
|
Initially
planned for 1967, Tampa-North did not open until sometime in 1968.
Usually Howard Johnson's complexes were sited at highway interchanges,
but road planners changed the route of nearby Interstate 75 rendering
Tampa-North hemmed in by other businesses and with no visibility
from I-75. Nonetheless the site successfully relied on signage and
its close proximity to Busch Gardens in order to attract patrons.
Remarkably the Tampa-North Motor Lodge was not only the last original
Howard Johnson's in the Tampa area, but also one of the last Motor
Lodges in the entire chain to keep its Orange roofed Gate Lodge.
Unfortunately the site's Restaurant was demolished and replaced
by an auto parts store.
