The Cordele location,
with an opening date of 1966, was typical of the complexes constructed
during the time period. After its life as a Howard Johnson's,
both the restaurant and Gate Lodge were demolished and the property
was converted into a Hampton Inn. At that time the structure
at the entrance was built, replacing the original lobby and restaurant,
and the parking lot side of the guest wings were "Hampton
Inn-o-sized." Seen in 2003, the former HoJo's had been
converted again--this time to a Best Western.
It was satisfying to
see that the original brick had not been stuccoed over as Cendant
now requires for the locations that it franchises.
