I have not researched the history of the Thunderbird Inn chain
which was a mid 20th century chain of motels in the United
States with examples still extant mostly in the southeast
United States. The one in Savannah, Georgia is an example
of a rare survivor of a retro-motel which is making a go well
into the 21st century--unlike the Savannah-Downtown Howard
Johnson's Motor Lodge, the Thunderbird lives on!

Below:
Purchased by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD)
in 2014, the site was used as student housing for several
years. SCAD does not recognize the significance of the Howard
Johnson's nor the innovative mid-20th century design ethos
utilized by the Howard Johnson Company in furthering the
progress of the hospitality industry and will soon have
demolished one of the last best most intact examples of
the chain.
So
much for a design college to recognize a lone survivor of
a genre of innovative design.
