Alexandria,
Louisiana -- address |
| |
| Initially a Motor Lodge was scheduled
to open in Alexandria in 1959 along side the Howard Johnson's Restaurant
that had been located on MacArthur Drive. However the Lodge did not
materialize until 1965! By 2002 the Restaurant had been demolished
and was replaced with a convenience store selling Shell gasoline.
I last ate at the Restaurant in October of 1983. |

The small building to the left
of the Gate Lodge served as a lounge (2003). It was a part of
the original complex and appeared to have had a deck on its
roof. The original Howard Johnson's railing around the deck
is clearly visible in Phil's pictures.
Mr. Edwards correctly attempts
to obtain permission to take photographs from vantage points
on the properties he visits. Unfortunately the proprietors of
Alexandria refused to grant him on-site permission to photograph
the Lodge. Thus he had to remain in the public right-of-way
in order to legally take pictures without being arrested for
trespassing. Nonetheless, he got some excellent views, no thanks
to the owners of the former Motor Lodge!
