A mid-rise, the Portland Motor Lodge was a precursor to modern highway hotels. Although the complex featured an A-frame or "T-layout" Restaurant clad with Orange Porcelain Enamel Roof Tiles, the site never included a Gate Lodge. The property was opened in about 1970 and then significantly upgraded with a Red coach Grill and convention facilities in the middle 1970s.

The Motor Lodge was exceptionally long-lived as a Howard Johnson, for it retained its famous name until nearly the mid 2010s and then was converted into a Ramada Inn.

Following the 1980s demise of the Howard Johnson Company, Portland's Restaurant became unbranded. Later it became a Friendly's and then in the 2010s an outlet of The Egg & I.
