Annapolis, Maryland -- 69 Old Mill Bottom Rd. N. (170 Revell Hwy.)

The Annapolis Motor Lodge and Restaurant were located along U.S. 50, 301 west of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Information about the bridge: 1, 2, 3). Initially only a Restaurant occupied the site, and opened in 1954. The all ground level Motor Lodge was added in 1957. Opening with 58 guest rooms, it had the distinction of being the first Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge in the Old Line State.

Constructed using the standardized plans devised by architects Rufus Nims and Carl Koch, the Motor Lodge at Annapolis closely resembled those built during the same time period like Ocala, Southern Pines, Little Rock and a few others.

The Lodge itself was remarkably long lived as a HoJo's--lasting with its Orange Roofed Gate Lodge into the 1990s. Outgrowing its original size, additional guest units were added by the early 1970s. During its last years, a Beacon replaced its original cupola, and the site was "proudly owned and operated by Emerald Hotels." After losing the HJ name it operated as a Villager and also as a Knights Inn before becoming unbranded. Unfortunately not long after 1999 the Gate Lodge's tent like porte-cochere had been chopped off.
