Constructed
using the standardized plans devised by architects Rufus
Nims and Carl Koch, the Motor Lodge at Annapolis closely
resembled those built during the same time period like Ocala,
Southern Pines, Little Rock and a few others.
The
Lodge itself was remarkably long lived as a HoJo's--lasting
with its Orange Roofed Gate Lodge into the 1990s. Outgrowing
its original size, additional guest units were added by
the early 1970s. During its last years, a Beacon replaced
its original cupola, and the site was "proudly owned
and operated by Emerald Hotels." After losing the HJ
name it operated as a Villager and also as a Knights Inn
before becoming unbranded. Unfortunately not long after
1999 the Gate Lodge's tent
like porte-cochere had been chopped off. |
