Lucky
for us, Kyle Snyder saved these photos of the Millersville Restaurant
which were snapped not too long after the HoJo's had been closed.
Kyle reports that it was in operation until at least 1990. Moreover,
he celebrated his 16th birthday in 1989 at this very HoJo's! Even
more remarkable than the photos is that he was able to preserve
the enamel "Howard Johnson's" letters-sign that was once
to the right of the entry. We can thank his Dad for the preservation
effort, for he was seeking a unique Christmas present for Kyle and
remembered that the old HJ letters were still on the building. About
his Dad's gift Kyle wrote:;
"So
one day, he drove up there, and found the building was still abandoned
and was now getting rather grown over, but the enamel letters were
completely intact and undisturbed. He noticed a sign on a boarded
up window with the name and number of a real estate company. So,
he called the number and told them he had no interest in the building,
he just wanted to remove the enamel lettering from the front. To
his surprise, they allowed him to do that, provided that he putty
up the holes from the attaching bolts so rain water wouldn't get
in the walls! So, my dad spent an afternoon doing just that. He
brought all the letters home one day, and got a neighbor to store
them in his garage, so he he could put together a very nice wooden
sign to mount the letters on."
And
so, Kyle got his unique gift and now can share it and his memory
with all of us! |
