Howard Johnson's was
slow to find franchisees to build Motor Lodges in Massachusetts.
Instead it focused on new locations primarily along tourist routes
to warmer climates. Nonetheless, in about 1962 the Chelmsford
Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex was among the earliest to
open in the Bay State.
