Terry
Burns who once worked for Howard Johnson's reflected that the
Ann Arbor HJ Restaurant was very significant because is was the
HQ for all of Michigan, and was a very busy location for the Company.
The district manager was stationed at the restaurant and all managers
trained there including him in 1973! Terry went on to say that
"it was the last Company restaurant in Michigan--it did a
great business for years, and closed in the mid-1980s." Later
it became Silverman's and finally an Alpha Coney Island. In its
last days the building was owned by the proprietors of the former
Motor Lodge who were charging the restaurant operators upwards
of $7,000 a month rent! |
