Representing
the era's optimism and prosperity, Detroit's New Center ultra-modern
high rise Motor Lodge opened in 1966 near the Fisher Building
and GM's 1923 Headquarters building.
Not only was the Howard Johnson's in the heart of America's
Motor Capital, but it also incorporated all of the standard
HoJo features that made it the most convenient place to stay.
After
years of decline, New Center was demolished in February of
1997. |

Southfield's
Restaurant was opened in 1959 or 1960 several years prior to the
Motor Lodge, which was first listed in HoJo's 1966 directory.
The
Motor Lodge was long ago razed and a Holiday Inn Express came to
occupy its site, while the Restaurant was extensively modified and
became a unit of Kerby's
Koney Island.
