Representing the era's
optimism and prosperity, Detroit's New Center ultra-modern high
rise Motor Lodge opened in 1966 near the Fisher Building and GM's 1923 Headquarters building. Not only
was the Howard Johnson's in the heart of America's Motor Capital,
but it also incorporated all of the standard HoJo features that
made it the most convenient place to stay.
Boasting 300 guest rooms,
it also afforded guests free parking and year-round swimming
in its indoor heated pool. Along with its Restaurant it also
had the Ticker Tape Tavern, a movie theater, and meeting rooms
for 25 to 550.
Like all good things,
this Howard Johnson's had to end. I surmise that it lay vacant
and wasted for a period of time, and finally unable to attract
revitalization it was demolished in February of 1997.
