Jackson,
Mississippi -- 2655 I-55 S @ McDowell
Rd |
Built
on a highly visible site just south of I-20 along Interstate 55,
the Jackson complex opened in the fall of 1968. It was built in
Howard Johnson's classic Motor Lodge and Restaurant configuration
and featured 78 guest rooms in its two-story guest buildings.
The
Restaurant ceased being a HoJo's and then was likely converted
into another eatery, was vacant for a time, then became the Thai
House Restaurant in 1992. Its owners, Prawat and Buranee Bunniran,
had operated a Chinese eatery in a local shopping mall before
its food court went bust. The Motor Lodge ceased being a Howard
Johnson during 1992 (about the same time that the Thai House was
opened in the former HJ Restaurant).

By
the 2000s the Motor Lodge became a Super 8 Motel. During 2004
the site lost even its lowly status as a Super 8 and was unbranded
as the Super Inn. At the beginning of the 2010s new hope for the
former Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge's continued existence was
revealed with the site adopting the America's Best Value Inn moniker--alas
its rebranding came at the expense of the guest room buildings'
integrity, for no happy motorist will want to stay in a prison
barracks.
Alas
the time may have come where the former Motor Lodge should be
demolished... |
