Meridian,
Mississippi
-- 110 Highway 80 East (@I-20 & I-59) |
|
Built
in classic style, Meridian's Howard Johnson's complex was opened
in 1969. In the 1970s the property was updated and in the middle
1980s the Gate Lodge was demolished and a new lobby was constructed
to the right of the Restaurant. At that time 46 guest rooms, an
enclosed pool/recreation area, and meeting rooms were added to the
site. The prosperous property was owned and operated by the local
Joiner family.

The
Meridian Howard Johnson Motor Lodge closed forever on December
2, 2006 and was subsequently demolished. Local bureaucrats and
elected officials blessed the site's redevelopment as a Drury
Inn and Logan's Roadhouse with a special tax exemption--apparently
in perpetuity based on an article in the Meridian Star.
Furthermore the Dury Inn was funded in part with bonds from the
Mississippi Business
Finance Corp.
