When Howard Johnson's celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2000 the Kirkwood location was featured on a special segment of NBC's Today Show, and both the weather vane and fiberglass Simple Simon and the Pieman figural underwent an expensive restoration rendering them to pristine like-new condition.

After twelve years of operation, Kirkwood was refurbished providing it with what was described as "a completely new 'within' look." Many Howard Johnson's Restaurants were renovated during the 1960s with modern space-age materials and decor. Note the George Nelson inspired saucer bubble lamps above the Dairy Counter, and Kirkwood's many surfaces were covered in formica at the time of its 1967 renovation.

For Those on the Go, the counter-stool area at Giessow's Howard Johnson Restaurant is a popular people's area. As a result of the detailed remodeling program, the counter now 'wears' an edging of glistening copper.

The copper hood over the kitchen's pass through and dropped ceiling treatment were perhaps the only survivors of the 1967 makeover by the 2000s. The classically outfitted Restaurant was remodeled again probably during the 1990s, and ironically in a style meant to appear old rather than space-age modern.

Below: When the Motor Lodge was constructed a solid wall replaced the widows at the Dairy Counter. Note that the stool bases were original from 1955 and that they were anchored into the floor requiring a trip to the basement in order to unbolt them!

Lower: While many Restaurants during the 1970s came to feature the standard "The Flavor of America" or "The World of 28 Flavors" on their backbars, Kirkwood's was a unique piece of art, and was flanked by HoJo's ice cream flavor panels.

An "all new acoustical ceiling and carpeting in a coordinate turquoise and green medallion pattern" were installed in the dining area. Moreover "a handsome overhead brass chandelier...added elegance." The 75 seat dining room also received new booths with cantilevered formica topped tables and "all new paneling to complement the turquoise and green draperies and to harmonize with the turquoise naugahyde booth upholstery."

The all new private dining area is graced with a series of smoked mirrors along one side. Wall panels, on the opposite side of the room, have individual light brackets inset. This room principally is used to accommodate overflow crowds for lunch and dinner.
