Elmsford,
New York
-- 290 Tarrytown Rd
AKA White Plains |
| |
Elmsford
dates from around 1962, and was featured in a series of television
commercials during the late 1960s when Howard Johnson's was promoting
its Captain's Platter.
The hillside setting allowed the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge/ Restaurant
complex to enjoy excellent visibility before foliage overgrew the
site.

By
Mr. Hampshire's visit to Elmsford in the early 2000s, only the
Restaurant building could still be easily seen. |

Until
Jack's trek to Elmsford, address searches indicated that a pizza
parlor had replaced the former HoJo's. However the Restaurant's
address is actually 300 Tarrytown Rd., and is a part of the Greenburg
Library system, but it isn't exactly clear if it's a branch
or not just a storage facility. Moreover the Motor Lodge was walled
off and became a family shelter in the early 1990s. The former
Lodge is one of several shelters operated by Westhab. |

|
| Mr.
Thomas noticed that while the original roof had been painted,
specs had flaked away revealing HoJo's Orange! |
|
|
| |
| |
| Through
the trees behind the former Restaurant a bit of the Motor Lodge
was evident--a section of original railing can be seen in the
background. |
