The complex was significantly altered in 1999 when it lost the Howard Johnson name. However the Gate Lodge's interior remains impressive with it expansiveness and exposed wood beams.

Note that the Gate Lodge received a cupola again after it became a Best Western.

Plattsburgh had a long history of playing host to successful Howard Johnson brands that began with a stand-alone Restaurant location in the middle 1950s. Although Ground Round long ago ceased being a part of HoJo's, it was created by the company. Plattsburgh's Ground Round is located adjacent to the former Motor Lodge complex.

Jack Thomas also spotted a nearby Lums. Once a part of the large Lums chain, Plattsburgh's location is now independent and one of the last few to bear the name.
