Nate's commentary continues:

With ski trains continuing into the 1960s, and with more and more visitors flocking to the area each year, North Conway continued to flourish as a vacation spot and shopping destination. As a result, the HJ franchise was a very successful operation, serving up HJ’s famous recipes through the 1970s. In the early 1980s, the owners of the North Conway store decided to drop the HJ franchise, largely because the Imperial Group, the new parent company of the HJ empire, was trying to take an even greater percentage of the restaurant’s profits.

The North Conway location now operates as Fandangle’s restaurant. It is still managed by the same owners who began the franchise back in the 1930s. It looks much the same as it did in the HJ days, except that the exterior walls are now painted a dark brown, a substantial addition has been made on the back, and the orange roof has given way to green.

Atop the roof, the original cupola still beacons, minus the Simple Simon and the Pieman weathervane and the fence that once surrounded the cylinder section. Even the interior of the store, including the rafters and granite fireplace, remains largely intact. Fandangle’s prides itself on old fashion New England home-cooking, thus maintaining many of the same elements and tastes it had acquired during its tenure as an HJ franchise. In addition to its North Conway store, Fandangle’s also operates a restaurant yearly at the Fryeburg Fair, a week-long agricultural fair, in nearby Fryeburg, Maine.

September 16, 2007:
North Conway Destroyed

Described as a total loss, reports indicated that the catastrophic fire was caused by old or faulty wiring in the basement. Flames shot through the roof as fireman fought the blaze in vain.

Left: Captured on video, YouTube member "skittless03818" has posted a scene of the devastating fire.

Special thanks to Kevin G. for the video and photo links!
