Middletown,
New Jersey
--
750 State Route 35 |
|
Opened
in August of 1962, this New Jersey Motor Lodge joined a previously
opened circa 1958 Restaurant. The complex was located between Middletown
and Red Bank, not far from the Garden State Parkway.
Its
location was convenient to many nearby corporations and attractions
including Bell Labs, AT&T, IFF, Anchor Glass, Garden State Arts
Center, Sandy Hook National Seashore, Monmouth Park Race Track,
Fort Monmouth, Monmouth College, and Monmouth Arts Center just to
name a few!

A
little more than a year after Bob Venditti took these terrific
photographs of the Restaurant, it was demolished and replaced
with an Outback Steakhouse. |

Incredibly
when Bob Venditti was at the site in November of 2004, he discovered
that the fiberglass Lamplighter figural logo (albeit painted blue)
was being proudly displayed on the freshly stuccoed guest building
behind the Gate Lodge. Bob Venditti visited Middletown's Howard
Johnson's Motor Lodge for the last time in late 2004. He wrote,
"This property still appears to be a well-run operation.
My two visits here in the 90's were very good. Although I don't
care much for the remod...and they covered over all that nice
brick...it could have been much worse..." |

the guest wing behind the swimming pool in Bob's 1997 photo above.
It was added in the late 1960s or early '70s to bump Middletowns'
guest room count to 82. |

Contrary
to what the sign says, it can't be the same kind
of place...Even as recently as the late 1990s, Middeltown
was still a complete Howard Johnson's! |
