The Mt. Holly Howard
Johnson's was set to open in 1959, and featured "59 beautifully
decorated units." The Howard Johnson Company wisely had
franchisees open Motor Lodge/ Restaurant complexes up and down
the 118 mile long New Jersey Turnpike. With nothing to block
the motorist's view, the sprawling Mt. Holly complex spread out
along the Turnpike giving weary travelers plenty of time to exit
and enjoy America's Landmark. |

By Bob's recent visit,
changes had rendered the once pristine example of roadside hospitality
nearly a wasteland. Only a shadow of its former self, the once
proud symbol of Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges, the Gate Lodge,
sat empty awaiting its sad fate even as a bit of its once gleaming
Orange Roof bled through... |
