 HOWARD JOHNSON'S
with comfort and speed along the
NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE

Postcard of Hartford Travel Plaza circa 1960s

During my 2000 visit to the New Jersey Turnpike I only stopped at the former Swedesboro Travel/Service Plaza. While the Howard Johnson's had been replaced by other food service providers and the interior of the plaza had been greatly altered, the exterior remained remarkably the same. Additionally to add to the HoJo's effect, the snack bar building was still standing and amazingly still had its original Howard Johnson's "Snack Bar" sign. I passed the southernmost plaza again in 2001 at night, only to be astounded that the empty snack bar's sign was lit!

With the Turnpike's modernization of the Travel Plazas it is unlikely that many of the original structures will remain or be recognizable.

  • No red lights
  • Safe travel in all kinds of weather
  • Save on time, gas oil, and tires

YOU'LL SENSE THE THRILL
of a new kind of driving when you get on the New Jersey Turnpike. Relaxed nerves...relaxed muscles...minimum eyestrain...as the smooth ribbon of multi-lane, skid-free pavement s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s out for 118 miles with no stop lights, no cross traffic, no left turns.
