 New Brunswick, New Jersey
26 Route 1 North

Built adjacent to its much earlier Colonial style Restaurant, the Motor Lodge opened in late 1958 or early 1959. Located not far from the New Jersey Turnpike, it was situated so that some of the thousands of people taking the then ultra-modern Super-Highway would stop and be "Rest Assured."

While the Grand Restaurant had an imposing and impossible to miss location, the Motor Lodge was built on a difficult site with uneven terrain. On its valuable corner, the Restaurant has apparently been demolished and replaced with other structures.

Amazingly the Motor Lodge has once again taken on the Howard Johnson name. Since rebranding runs amuck, it is not surprising that the once strong name in lodging, especially in New Jesery along the Turnpike, should have been once again placed on the former Motor Lodge. Bob said that it had been an Econo Lodge, and that it has apparently been reasonably well maintained. However he added that the clientele may have been long term residents rather than traditional travelers.
