Penns
Grove, New Jersey --
10 Ho Jo Lane (517 S Pennsville-Auburn Rd)
AKA Salem |
|
Penns
Grove was the southernmost Howard Johnson's adjacent to
the New Jersey Turnpike. Located near Toll Gate #1 just
one mile east of the Delaware memorial Bridge, the complex
opened in 1967 with 80 units. It remained a Motor Lodge
until 1993, and had expanded to offer 142 guest rooms. Owned
by Prime Motor Inns, the property was converted into a dank
and unattractive Wellesley Inn. Its brick stuccoed over
and Gate Lodge demolished, only the basic room layouts remained
by 2004.
Penns
Grove became one of the last two Wellesleys in operation
following Prime's dissolution by The Blackstone Group.

Above,
Below, & Lower: Facing the Turnpike at the front
of the property, the large size Nims derived Restaurant building
featured an expanse of what HoJo's called "Arizona cactus
canyon stone" on its facade. The building was demolished
by the end of the 2000s. |
