Penns Grove,
New Jersey --
10 Ho Jo Lane
(517 S Pennsville-Auburn Rd) |
|
| |
| |
|
Penns
Grove was the southernmost Howard Johnson's adjacent to the
New Jersey Turnpike. Located near Toll Gate #1, the complex
opened in 1967 with 80 units. It remained a Motor Lodge until
the 1990s, and had expanded to offer 142 guest rooms.

| By
the late '90s, the Motor Lodge was converted into a dank and
unattractive Wellesley Inn. Its brick stuccoed over and Gate
Lodge demolished, only the basic room layouts remained by 2004. |

Mr.
Venditti recalled seeing Penns Grove as an attractive Howard Johnson's
on his many trips North, but its location never served as a convenient
stopping point for his family. The large size Nims derived Restaurant
building featured an expanse of what HoJo's called "Arizona
cactus canyon stone" on its facade. Apparently the building's
last occupant had gone out of business by the time Bob stopped
to get these shots in 2004. |
