Phillipsburg, New Jersey -- 1315 US Highway 22

The Phillipsburg Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex was initially scheduled for a 1962 opening. However the facility was not fully operational until late 1965 or early 1966. Well situated along U.S. 22 just off of I-87 on the eastern approach to the Phillipsburg-Easton-Bethlehem-Allentown area, the classic highway-style 72 guest room Motor Lodge never received an addition and remained branded as a Howard Johnson until 1996.

Once set nearly by itself in the midst of pastoral farmland, the former Howard Johnson's complex somehow survived into the 2000s while its surroundings became a sea of big box stores and strip shopping centers.

Above, Below & Lower: The site's A-frame Gate Lodge almost made it unscathed. Even squared off, stuccoed, and with its cupola chopped off, the classic structure was a pleasant sight featuring its original gleaming Orange Roof.

Higher: Phillipsburg's Restaurant became a Perkins.

Above & Below: The guest buildings retained much of their classic curb appeal--exposed natural brick, sliders, railings and even a remnant of the original rooftop signage.
