North Plainfield, New Jersey -- 1011 Route 22 @ West End Ave

Located between New York City and Easton, North Plainfield opened in 1962. It was described as "Union County's newest and most beautiful Motor Lodge."

The 70 guest rooms of the Motor Lodge featured all of the standard HoJo's amenities. Built using an early design, the bathrooms reportedly did not have drop ceilings.

Note the "Oriental" motif on the privacy screen--perhaps reminiscent of a bonsai tree!

Flash forward to 2005. Well past its prime, the 40+ year old Motor Lodge retained the Howard Johnson name and even its altered Gate Lodge by the time of Eric Paddon's quick visit.

Happy though we should be that most of its Orange Roof still gleams in the sunlight, North Plainfield is a sad sight.

Mr. Paddon noted that an Eckerd Drugs likely occupies the Restaurant's former location.
