Ramsey, New Jersey
 -- 1255 Route 17 South

Opened in about 1961, Ramsey by 2003 was in rough shape according to Bob Venditti. He also noted that the clientele was not at all upscale, and observed what could have been an episode of COPS unfold while he was a guest there!

The Motor Lodge was one of the nearly dozen in the Garden State which had been a Prime Motor Inns property, but it apparently was not retained following Prime's 1990 bankruptcy reorganization and was never converted into a Wellesley Inn, and remained branded as a Howard Johnson--one of the last original Howard Johnson's.

Left: Ramsey was the last HoJo Motor Lodge in New Jersey with a Lamplighter Weathervane--by latter 2000s it had been removed ... none anywhere continue to fly the Lamplighter

It's just too bad that the property was not maintained, for the guest wings appeared to be very original looking--especially the sliders with their "National Airlinesish" splats.   Bob noted that unlike the exterior, the room was adequate, and contained a surprise. Seen in his shot below "the room beams and vaulted ceiling continued through the bathroom."

Above, Right & Below: Bob remarked that "the Gate Lodge has been so extensively annexed, it's almost a miracle the original roof line and steeple/weather vane have survived in ANY form, peeking out from among the modifications."
