Lest patrons were confused by the Restaurant's peculiar design, a traditional Simple Simon and the Pieman greeted weary beach goers and tourists alike from its spot on the mirror behind the Dairy Bar above the kitchen's pass through. Moreover, the mirror panels announced HoJo's famous ice cream flavors as well as the other food items that had helped to make Howard Johnson's a household name across the land!

Back in 2000 with slim hopes of seeing Asbury's HoJo's, I convinced my Dad to detour to it in a mad dash up the East Coast from Dinwiddie, Virginia on our way to visit family north of Philadelphia. By the time we arrived in Asbury Park, it was late and the place looked like a ghost town. Not knowing exactly where the Howard Johnson's was or even what it looked like caused a few anxious moments. But there should have been no concern!

On the very night we arrived, a Grateful Dead concert was scheduled in the concert hall adjacent to the HJ. Much to my luck, seems that the owner of the old Howard Johnson's long ago discovered that he could open his restaurant whenever a concert was eminent and capture the crowd. Deadheads were packed into the place, and gradually filtered out once they realized that the concert had begun.
