Rockaway, New Jersey -- 14 Green Pond Road
AKA Rockaway-Dover

Converted into The Best Western Inn at Rockaway by the middle 2000s, the former Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex originally opened in late 1967 with 64 rooms in its two 2-story guest buildings. The classically configured location later advertised that it offered six efficiencies. The Rockaway facility had been one of several that belonged to Prime Motor Inns prior to its purchase of the Howard Johnson brand from Marriott in 1985-'86.

Although its Gate Lodge and Restaurant miraculously retained much of their recognizability, the guest room buildings at Rockaway were completely redone--on the inside and out.

Researcher Eric Paddon observed that the complex "was well positioned along Interstate 80 for those just leaving the NY area or approaching it (Delaware Water Gap was about 40 miles or so west)."
