Converted
into The Best Western Inn at Rockaway by the middle 2000s, the former
Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex originally opened
in late 1967 with 64 rooms in its two 2-story guest buildings. The
classically configured location later advertised that it offered
six efficiencies. The Rockaway facility had been one of several
that belonged to Prime Motor Inns, and was likely converted into
the now defunct Wellesley Inn brand prior to Prime's dissolution
during the 2000s.
Although
its Gate Lodge and Restaurant miraculously retained much of their
recognizability, the guest room buildings at Rockaway were completely
redone--on the inside and out.
