Following
the 1993 addition of a modest convention and meeting room facility,
a new nondescript lobby replaced the A-frame Gate Lodge. At least
the property's owners gave the sad new lobby an orange colored
roof in a nod to history--alas new owners changed its color to
turquoise in the middle 2000s before relinquishing the Howard
Johnson brand altogether. |

Following
the sale of the Howard Johnson Company and its subsequent dissolution
by Marriott and Prime, the site's Restaurant was converted into
a JB's Big Boy. Then upon Marriott's hand-over of Big Boy to
Elias Brothers (a Big Boy franchisee based in Michigan) in 1987,
the then 110 unit JB's chain was granted the option to withdraw
from the Big Boy system at no cost which it exercised in 1988.
JB's
fortunes faltered following its exit from the Big Boy fold and
endured ownership changes and bankruptcy before finally ceasing
business during the 2000s. By 2013 the former Restaurant at
Albuquerque-East was listed doing business as the Owl Cafe.
