Since
the Amsterdam Restaurant didn't open until 1979, it was only in
business for a little more than five years. In its last guise it
had been the New Amsterdam Diner (Click

Both
Jack and Brian were able to get a few shots through the windows
of the Dairy Bar area. All things considered, the interior
remained remarkably intact. Notably the cantilevered stool
bases and stained-glass-looking Dairy Bar backdrop were still
in place. |

A
chalk board still advertised Snooky's Saloon pointing prospective
patron through the dining room to its illusory entrance.
Perhaps renovations
had begun by the time these photos were taken, for a bright
yellow portable light stand had been placed in front of the
Dairy Bar. |

A surreal scene
greeted Brian Florence at the remains of the Amsterdam Howard
Johnson's Restaurant when he stopped to capture these fleeting
shots in the cold and dark of a wintery February night.

Built adjacent
to the New York Thruway, travelers could easily spot this circa
1979 Howard Johnson's from the toll highway, but usually only
after they had sped past its exit. |
