Howard Johnson's Landmark: October - November, 1960; pages 4 & 5

Buffalo, New York -- 650 Delaware Avenue

Opened in 1941 on the site of the Rhut Mansion, by the late 1950s the HoJo's was said to have become obsolete in style and possessed an aging decor. It was determined that the Colonial restaurant would be demolished and replaced by a modern Nims type, but the original building was remodeled instead. From the basement up, the whole place was gutted, transforming it into an ultra-modern Restaurant for the 1960s!

In the course of renovation, the original roof was removed and replaced with new tiles, and the modern space-age tower cupola was installed. Additionally the kitchen, dining rooms, and fountain area all received complete makeovers.

Starting in the 1960s the Howard Johnson Company had embarked on a grand plan to modernize and further standardized. Using the most current materials and designs, existing Restaurants like Buffalo's were remade into the new forward looking scheme. Howard Johnson remade its facilities to be as modern as tomorrow! The once highly touted HoJo's was eventually demolished and by 2001 its prime corner site was occupied by a Walgreens.
