Opened in early 1971 with 96 guest rooms, the Charlotte-South Motor Lodge was an early location to utilize the cost saving "abbreviated balcony" design for its guest wings.

However the location employed the more costly non-Mansard style Restaurant building design that was in wide use from about 1966 until the early 1970s. Unfortunately it is not know what type of lobby the Motor Lodge originally featured.
