Fayetteville, North Carolina -- 2533 Gillespie St. (U.S. 301 S)

At the dawn of the standardized chain hospitality industry, Howard Johnson's led the way. Opened in 1954, the Fayetteville location was the SECOND Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge to have been opened. Unlike the first unit in Savannah which was a preexisiting motel conversion, the Fayetteville complex was new construction designed by architect Howard Chilton. The property's layout resembled typical roadside motels of the era, and did not reflect the innovations of design that the Howard Johnson Company adopted soon after it was built. Oddly, Fayetteville's architecture incorporated an earlier Restaurant colonial style cupola that was, at the time, in the process of being phased out by the HJ Company.

No longer able to meet Howard Johnson's standards, Fayetteville--second in the chain--ceased waving the Howard Johnson's name in 1978. Considering how nonstandard the location was, it is amazing that it remained a HoJo's for so long!

When Bob Venditti stopped to check out the old Howard Johnson's, he discovered that the Motor Lodge was operating as the Carolina Motor Inn and the Restaurant had been the Million Dance Club & Pavilion Private Club.
