Opened
in 1954, the Fayetteville location was the SECOND Howard Johnson's
Motor Lodge to have been opened. Unlike the first unit in Savannah
which was a preexisting motel conversion, the Fayetteville complex
was new construction designed by the renowned mid century moderne
architect Howard
Chilton
who was based in Palm Beach, Florida. The property's layout resembled
typical roadside motels of the era, and did not reflect the innovations
of design that the Howard Johnson Company adopted soon after it
was built.
No
longer able to meet Howard Johnson's standards, Fayetteville--second
in the chain--ceased waving the Howard Johnson's name in 1978.
Considering how non-standard the location was, it is amazing that
it remained a HoJo's for so long! |

During
the 1960s, orange porcelain enamel roof tiles were added to the
lobby to better identify that the Motor lodge was in fact a Howard
Johnson's. |

As
recently as 2002 the "lobby" still sported its colonial
style cupola and roof tiles albeit painted blue. By 2003 the HoJo's
cupola was replaced with a stub and the roof was tile-less once
more. |

By
2007 the former Motor Lodge's office was unrecognizable, and in
later years the cupola stub was removed altogether. |
