An early convenience of motels was the ability of exiting one's automobile and directly entering the guest room. Howard Johnson's evolved to allow for this convenience by utilizing sliding glass doors, and at the same time provided security for those afraid to directly enter their rooms by having central corridors with traditional entry doors.

Today fewer and fewer highway motels (hotels) offer the convenience of going directly from car to room.

Even after nearly thirty years, the High Point complex still looked fresh and modern. By its mid 1970s construction the Howard Johnson Corporation had perfected the motel room and the overall layout of its Motor Lodges.
