Time's
Up ... The Interstate Highway system
which caused Rockingham's HJ to be bypassed may create a
new opportunity for the building to serve travellers once
again when I-74 opens. Only about 2 miles from what will
be the area's only interchange with the new Interstate,
the Goodman family which operates Revel's Bar-B-Q on U.S.
74 hopes to remodel and reopen the former HoJo's to replace
its current building which will be demolished for a realignemnt
of U.S. 1.
Unfortunately
the tired and long abandoned HoJo's building did not pass
local inspection, and the deadline for improvements had
passed for the Goodman's to carry them out. Without the
code violations corrected, the building will be demolished
per order of local authorities. |

Mr.
Goodman reported that Revel's classic neon sign design dates from
the 1950s, and originally featured animated pig's hands and a
flashing arrow. The sign was redesigned in the early 1970s by
its original maker and is no longer animated. The Goodman's hope
to move the sign to the former HoJo's location, but onerous sign
codes will like prevent the move. |

Ironically
the Interstate system that killed the area's once vibrant roadside
service industry will likely revive it, but at the cost of whatever
had survived from the earlier time. No doubt property values will
soar, and I-74's interchange with U.S. 1 will play host to Applebee's,
Chili's, etc., and the drab Sleep Inns of the world. |
