Initially
the Greensboro-South or Segefield Howard Johnson's was a
stand-alone Restaurant adjacent to the General Greene Motel.
The
General Greene was described in a 1960 AAA guide as "a
very pleasant, nicely furnished one and two story motel
with 59 rooms." Robby Delius said that the motel had
been renamed but was intact until the 1990s. |

In
about 1960 the Restaurant and its adjoining General Greene
Motel were joined by the 40 guest unit Greensboro-South Howard
Johnson's Motor Lodge.
Interestingly,
researcher Robby Delius discovered an advertisement in an
early 1960s Greensboro business directory that touted all
three establishments in one ad. |

Even
as the complex reached the end of its existence as a Howard
Johnson's, its Gate Lodge was still a spectacular sight.
Not
long after the photo below was taken, the former Restaurant
was leveled. Finally even the fabulous Gate Lodge was demolished.
I-85 was widened and its new lanes required space where portions
of the complex had been situated. Close proximity to the highway
that had been a benefit ultimately led to the site's ruination. |
