Like Cleveland's University Circle, Airport, and Lake front Motor Lodges, Independence featured a faux Gate Lodge. However its design was more similar to University Circle than to the others. Additionally, the Lodge had a peculiar guest room balcony arrangement like Baltimore's mid-rise location. The balconies were cantilevered and haphazardly placed--some guest rooms had balconies while others did not!

By 2004 few original HoJo's reminders remained. Only the bottom floor had the original "round" patio light fixtures.
