Columbus-East,
Ohio
4990 & 5000 East
Main St (U.S. 40) |
An early standardized
Motor Lodge, East opened in 1959 with 110 guest rooms. Forty-five
additional guest rooms were added to the location in the mid-to-late
1960s. A cropped version of the above postcard can sometimes
be found advertising other Motor Lodges. It became one of a handful
of locations that represented the chain as a "generic"
yet ideal image.
Advertisements billed
the location as an "in-city resort of distinction planned
for gracious living. Enclosed pool for year 'round swimming.
Steam baths. Shuffleboard--putting green--tennis court."
When the property was added on to, another pool was built and
advertisements boasted that the Motor Lodge featured a "Complete
indoor recreation area."

The property was leveled
in the late 1990s and remained unredeveloped when Phil visited
the site in 2003. The only evidence that something was there
were the curb cuts and asphalt drive-ways to nothing... |

|
While the site became
an empty lot, the adjacent service station and rows of post WW
II cracker box houses remained. |
