Having suffered wanton neglect under what had been the poor stewardship of FAI, the tired Howard Johnson's served its last frankfurter and scoop of ice cream on November 26, 2000. Distraught employees, one of whom who had worked at Pittston for 25 years, said that FAI had only given them four day's notice that the Restaurant was to be closed--their lives and livelihoods were completely upturned.

Seemingly out of order, the "rounded edge" post 1985 Howard Johnson sign was recycled after the Motor Lodge had been a Days Inn. Thus the sign frame was stored and then reinstalled with its Wynfield face after the Days' stint only to be taken down again when the location became a Super 8.

The Restaurant with its gleaming Orange Roof was closed in November of 2000 to be promptly demolished. Its site became a parking lot for an uninspired Arby's that was built on what had been the HoJo's parking lot.
